Your donations helped create accessible prenatal and maternal care. From a total of 544 donations, we have raised $40,263 for training and equipment for the Birthing Center in the Jordan Valley.
Babies enter the world on their own timing, and this holds true for Palestinian babies, despite the unique circumstances surrounding childbirth in Palestine. Checkpoints and an unstable housing situation due to demolition or expulsion orders along with high poverty rates in the Jordan Valley are a few challenges that threaten access to prenatal and maternal healthcare in the area.
With your help, Rebuilding Alliance was able to partner with seven Rotary Clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area, Ramallah and Nazareth to create the first birthing clinic in the area after 7 years of planning and programming.
How do we do it? On March 19th, 2014, the Birthing Center Wing at the Emergency Clinic in Ein Al-Beida and the Prenatal clinic in Al-Aqaba opened their doors for Palestinian families in the area and its outskirts! With the help of the Rotary Clubs as well as Assist International, 6 pallets of equipment that included ultrasound machines, heart monitors and infant warmers, were purchased and delivered to the clinic. The Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Jameel Daraghmeh, of Tubas, the district where Ein Al-Beida is located, hired 3 female physicians, and three other physicians, Dr. Mauro Parra, Dr. Hugo Salinas, and Dr. Nedeska Morales, from University Hospital in Santiago, Chile served as trainers for the staff. In 2018, the Birthing Center was visited by a documentary filmmaker, Diana Paul, to film birthing experiences in Palestine. However, there remains the challenge of staffing. There is a shortage of medical staff, which includes nurses and midwives, that can assist and operate within the clinic around the clock.
By creating this birthing center, Rebuilding Alliance and its partners brought healthcare for babies and their mothers closer to home, and this is an important step to creating a healthy future for them and their families!
