Uplifting people amidst adversity

Thank you for supporting Fatma, Rebuilding Alliance's social work in the South Hebron Hills.

Following the escalation of violence in Masafer Yatta, locals, particularly women and children, are facing numerous hardships. Despite these challenges, Fatma has made a positive difference in the lives of many people, especially one woman (name not mentioned on the request of the beneficiary).

Fatima shared that this woman, like many others in the community, faced various forms of oppression, including verbal and physical abuse, economic hardship, and psychological distress. She was not allowed to visit her family and felt isolated. However, thanks to Fatima's consistent support, her situation has significantly improved.

Fatma has been working with this woman since May. Fatma took on a holistic approach to help her:

  • Encouraged the woman to participate in training programs and workshops, including on women's empowerment.

  • Introduced the woman to local organizations.

  • Facilitated discussions with the woman's family, helping them recognize her potential and productivity, which fostered a more supportive home environment.

The woman has made significant progress. The violence she experienced at home has come to an end. Her financial situation has improved, and she now feels secure. Additionally, her relationship with her children has strengthened. One child, who previously screamed in his sleep, is now more engaged in play and activities, showing signs of healing.

The impact of these interventions goes beyond just one family. Community members are now more open to discussing and addressing issues. An elderly woman recently reported her assault by the occupying forces directly to Fatima, showing a growing awareness and willingness to seek help.

Fatima is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of children in the community. The children participate in recreational activities, which have significantly boosted their confidence. Initially, cultural barriers made it difficult to address personal and community issues, but progress has been made over time. Despite the successes, challenges remain. Safety risks continue to be a concern, as encounters with settlers and military personnel present daily threats, particularly at crossing points.

This success story from Masafer Yatta highlights the transformative power of social support in communities under occupation. With continued efforts, there is hope to further empower women and families facing similar challenges. Thank you for being part of this vital work.
